The Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa is located on the coast at North Berwick, just a 40min train journey from central Edinburgh.

The nineteenth century building overlooking West Links golf course is an ideal short break from city life. For an after winter recovery, the February to March Sunday Spa Break offer is a perfect way to loosen muscles using the excellent spa facilities and to take advantage of afternoon seaside walks in the crisp, sunny weather.

The Sunday Spa at Macdonald Marine Hotel

For £150 the offer of the girly spa package includes:

  • Luxury accommodation
  • A full Scottish breakfast
  • A three course meal, including a glass of wine or champagne in the 2AA Rosette Craigleith Restaurant
  • A back, neck and shoulder massage and an express facial using Decleor products

Spa facilities include an 18 metre swimming pool, an outdoor/indoor salt hydro pool, and four different kinds of sauna and steam room. A bio sauna even utilizes colour light therapy whilst the rock sauna provides some extra hot dry heat to relax the muscles.

The Sunday Spa package includes the Decleor back massage and facial which is given by a fully qualified beauty therapist in one of the many private suites. Decleor Paris is a 100% natural French skincare range that feels nourishing and divine on the skin. Time is given after a treatment to lie down under a duvet and relax a separate lounge room. But without the duvet provided, the room can actually be quite cold.

A Twin Room in the Four Star Macdonald Marine Hotel

The twin room overlooking the car park on the side adjacent to the street of the hotel may not boast coastal views or a sweeping green golf course. But the morning and afternoon sunlight streaming onto the comfortable, clean beds makes this a perfect room to relax in after a morning in the spa or after a treatment. A large ensuite bathroom with cosy robes and slippers and tea making facilities as well as room service allows for the opportunity to never leave the room if desired. This is entirely possible due to the lethargy induced after spending an hour or so in the varying steam rooms and saunas of the spa.

North Berwick Town

North Berwick is a quaint seaside town with an interesting history. The formation of the landscape dates back some 340 million years to when many volcanic eruptions formed the famous landmarks that are here today. The islands of Craigleith, Fidra, Lamb and Bass Rock are positioned in the water around the bay with Berwick Law not far from the centre of the town.

There are a variety cafes on the main street with a plethora of charity shops for those who enjoy some bargain hunting as well as boutiques selling designer clothing and beach style interior decor. And of course the beautiful beaches surrounded with craggy black volcanic rocks provide the tranquillity that only nature can offer.

A Three Course Meal at the Macdonald Marine Hotel Restaurant

A delicious three course meal is part of the Sunday Spa package in the award winning Craigleith Restaurant. It began with Salmon Roulade and warm sun-dried tomato breads with balsamic vinegar. This was followed by perfectly cooked and locally sourced fresh cod on a bed of celeriac and greens. Dessert was Pear Panacotta and Crème Brulee. A selection of cheeses is also an option for those without a sweet tooth.

Afterwards, chocolate truffles and fudge were offered in the relaxing atmosphere of the Links lounge and bar area. A restful sleep is ensured in the comfortable rooms of the hotel after a good meal and spa treatments.

Breakfast Overlooking North Berwick

But after such a satisfying three course meal in the evening, it can be difficult to take full advantage of the huge breakfast display. This includes an array of cereals, fresh and dried fruits, pastries, breads, a cold meat platter, fruit juices, your choice of coffee or tea and toast and any combination of a full cooked Scottish breakfast. But it is a lovely way to begin the day whilst watching the early morning golfers working their way over the frost covered green. And lunch may not be needed which makes this one night spa package slightly more cost effective.

With such a short and scenic train journey back to Edinburgh, this luxury Scottish relaxation break is an easy choice for locals. Less time travelling means more time to enjoy the facilities at the Macdonald Marine Hotel and Spa and to take advantage of all that the quaint seaside town of North Berwick has to offer.
